Before Wealth & Fame

Before matching Arnold Schwarzenegger in Mr. Olympia wins, Phil Heath attended Rainier Beach High School in Seattle, Washington. Heath played shooting guard for the varsity basketball team, and he helped his team win the state title in 1998.

Thanks to his basketball career, Phil Heath was accepted to the University of Denver on an athletic scholarship. In Denver, he played for the University’s Division I basketball team while studying business administration, averaging 1.3 points in four seasons. Unfortunately, his lackluster performance on the court dashed his dreams of entering the NBA and caused him to spiral into depression.

Bodybuilding Career

In 2002, Phil Heath began bodybuilding, and after three years of training, he won the National Physique Committee title. This enabled him to compete as an IFBB professional, and the following year, he won the Colorado and New York Pro Championships.

After placing seventh at the Arnold Classic in 2007, he qualified for the Mr. Olympia contest but decided not to enter so he could improve. Heath competed in and placed second to Dexter Jackson in the 2008 Iron Man competition and at the Arnold Classic. That same year, he participated in his first Mr. Olympia competition and took home third place.

In 2009, he placed fifth at Mr. Olympia, and in 2010, he placed second at Mr. Olympia and the Arnold Classic. His first-place win at Mr. Olympia came in 2011, after which he also won the Sheru Classic.

In 2013, he placed first at Mr. Olympia for the second time and won his first Arnold Classic Europe.

A Body Building Champion

Following his 2013 victories, Phil Heath joined The BroMans in a Total Nonstop Action tag-team gauntlet wrestling match. He then accompanied them to the TNA World Tag Team Championship, where they beat James Storm and Gunner.

From 2015 to 2017, Heath took home first place at Mr. Olympia, defending the title six times consecutively in total. He held on to the title until 2018, when he came in second to Shawn Rhoden, after which he took a hiatus.

That year, he starred in Gifted, a film documenting his training, family, and connections in the bodybuilding community. Heath returned to Mr. Olympia in 2020 but only earned third place behind Brandon Curry and Mamdouh Elssbiay. Despite this, Heath had become one of the richest bodybuilders in the world thanks to his dedication, discipline, and incredible physique.

Recent Work

Most recently, Phil Heath appeared in and produced the film Breaking Olympia: The Phil Heath Story, released in 2024. The film, featuring Dwayne Johnson and Jay Culter, documents Heath’s bodybuilding career and his rise to become the greatest Mr. Olympia winner.

While he hasn’t competed since 2020, Heath has never officially announced his retirement, allowing fans to hope for a comeback. Recent photos of him training on his Instagram have only fueled rumors of a return to the stage, though nothing concrete has been set.
